Cancun beaches, Mexico
From Cancun Playa del Carmen to Playa Langosta
The Cancun beaches are simply very impressive. The golden-colored tiny-grained sand actually stays
cool when it’s hot outside, because it is composed of innumerable microscopic plankton fossils.

The Cancun beaches along the northern side of the island fronting Bahia Mujeres are narrower but
have the same velvety sand. The water here is calm and shallow, the sandy bottom is mostly free of
rocks, and the Cancun beaches are regularly raked to clear them of seaweed.

The Caribbean beaches are wider and more dramatic with occasional crashing breakers and dangerous undertows.

Almost every Cancun beach is in front of the big resorts. All beaches in Mexico, however, are still
federally owned and therefore public, even though they may seem like they are a hotel property. The
inner coast of Cancun Island borders saltwater Nichuptè Lagoon.
Playa Linda is a Cancun family beach just across the bridge over Canal Nichuptè, at Km 4. Boat tours embark to
Isla Mujeres from the pier here and there are several gift, snack and dive shops.
Playa Langosta is a Cancun beach next to the Casa Maya Hotel at Km 5.
This Cancun beach is close to several yacht clubs, water sports facilities, a seaplane base, shops and
restaurants. Tour boats and booze cruises leave from the dock here.

Playa Caracol is close to the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Cancun Beach Hotel and the Xcaret bus
terminal. Further east is Cancun Point, the crook of the Cancun beach elbow. The very tip of the
point behind the Camino Real hotel is where Mujeres Bay meets the open Caribbean.
Playa Tortugas, near the Intercontinental Presidente Cancun Beach Resort at Km 6 is frequented
by locals and tourists staying downtown.

Isla Mujeres is a Cancun beach that is visible in the distance but only on clear days.
Waves crash against the rocks and send up plumes of spray on the Caribbean side, while just around the
point the water is calm, shallow and translucent. Note the change in hues from steely blue to soft
turquoise. A lone palapa hut offers a nice vantage point to observe the open sea.

Reaching the Point is an easy walk from the Camino Real’s beachfront
through shallow water and scattered rocks (wear nonslip shoes). Stand on the
point and face west for a lovely view over Cancun beaches that takes in the peach exterior of Fiesta
Americana hotel, vividly colored water and coconut palms rustling in the breeze.

Playa Chac-Mool, at Km 9.5 is another popular Cancun beach not associated with one of the big
hotels. Washed by the intensely hued Caribbean surf, it has sand that is incredibly powdery.
Playa Delfines is at Km 17 on the southern end of the Cancun hotel zone, opposite the El Rey
ruins. The wide stretch of Cancun beach sand here is far from the action and as a result provides a
more relaxed setting for swimming and beachcombing.
Playacar-Playa Del Carmen Beach: North Playa del Carmen beach, a wide
white Cancun sand beach north of Porto Real, is normally quieter than the central Cancun beaches.

You won’t face all the restaurants, dive shops, vendors etc., however, you will sunbath and relax, guaranteed.
Central Playa del Carmen Cancun beach is where it all starts. You’ll find everything you
need right at your fingertips; restaurants, bars, water sport equipment rental and the vendors.
By the ferry dock to Cozumel, this Cancun beach is not as wide but is still huge.
South of the dock is Playacar, the size of this Cancun Playa del Carmen
beach varies with the seasons. Even though all beaches are public in Mexico,
Playacar can almost be seen as a private Cancun beach for those who rent a
condo or stay at one of the all inclusive resorts there.
Come and enjoy the Cancun beaches on your Cancun vacation!
