Cancun’s metamorphosis from drowsy fishing village to Mexico's

hotels and magnificant golf courses is a true Cinderella story.
About thirty years ago tourists were almost unknown in Cancun. Most of the tourists
opted for another Mexico vacation destination in the Yucatan peninsula.

They were all going to the Maya Ruins at Chichen Itza or the
sultry charm of Merida while the rich and the glamorous all went to Acapulco to get a tan.

At the beginning of the 70s, Cancun was not even shown on the maps!
Now Cancun is one of the most populair beach vacation destinations in Mexico. The building boom
had barely begun in the mid-80s. The permanent population, the majority of whom serve the tourism
industry and who hailed from all over Mexico, has mushroomed from the original handful of fishermen.
Some 3 million visitors arrive now annually to Cancun, 90% being from United States or Canada.

Cancun and Playa del carmen are Mexico’s most popular beach destinations for several reasons.
Vacationers flock to Cancun for the year-round warm weather, beautiful beaches,
for constant sea breezes and the tropical sunsets; for fishing, diving, and sailing;
for the fancy restaurants, the upscale boutiques and flashy nightspots!

They both are also cheap Mexico Spring break hotspots, a major convention city, a getaway for
honeymooners and a convenient base from which to explore the rest of the Yucatan.
Cancun city, located on the mainland, is the commercial and
business backbone. Cancun Island, an elbow-shaped sandbar nearly 15 miles
but just a quarter mile wide, is separated from the mainland by narrow causeways at either end.
In between are the calm waters of Cancun's Nichupte Lagoon.

All of the Cancun island is occupied by the Hotel Zone, which
consists almost entirely of tourist services. It boasts some 25,000 hotel rooms,
great Cancun beaches, fine restaurants, loud nightspots, pricey shopping, championship golf
courses and recreational activities from water skiing to windsurfing.
The newness of Cancun’s hotel zone contrasts evidently with the rundown villages and centuries old Maya
ruins found in other parts of the Yucatan. The big hotels are the real “sights”, with public areas awash
in marble, tropical plants and dramatically lit art. Architecturally, the most recently built
hotels take their cue from Mexico’s ancient pyramids and Temples.

Once based in Cancun there are several vacation spots you may want to explore. Cozumel,
which is Mexico’s most populated island. The waters of Cozumel are unsurpassed for
their clarity and for the variety of brilliantly colored marine life. A somewhatlower-cost alternative to Cancun,
it attracts mainly laid back sun-seekers that don’t really care about nightlife. Another island to visit in the region
is Isla Mujeres, a less developed and more casual spot than Cozumel.
The crystal-clear waters off the island are great for snorkeling.
Very close to Cancun is Playa del Carmen, approximately 40 miles
away, a beach that attracts tourists for being a cheap Mexico beach vacation
spot in the Yucatan Peninsula. Playa del Carmen vacationers will usually be
able to do the same tours and activities as their "neighbors", but cheaper.
Come and enjoy the Cancun and Playa del Carmen beaches, weather and golf courses
