Mexico is made up of 31 states divided into 8 different regions. The Mexico travel regions are
as follows; the Yucatan Peninsula, Pacific Coast, Baja California, Northwestern Mexico,
Northeastern Mexico, Mexico City and the Federal District of Mexico, Central
Mexico and Southern Mexico. All together these Mexico vacation travel regions
attract more than 20 million tourists every year.

Yucatan Peninsula: The most visited of Mexico vacation travel regions! The Yucatan Peninsula’s
Caribbean coast boasts Cancun (Mexico’s 1st vacation travel destination), Playa
del Carmen, Cozumel (one of the world foremost dive sites) as part of a 100-mile
stretch of beaches and offshore coral reefs.

The Mexican peninsula also has numerous archeological sites, notably the remains of three great
Mayan cities: Chichen Itza, Uxmal, and the seaside ruins of Tulum. The European-flavored city of
Merida is, like much Yucatan, strongly Indian in character. States: Yucatan, Campeche, Quintana Roo.
Baja California: Although much of the Baja Peninsula is inhospitable
wilderness, it also is a rapidly growing mexico vacation travel region.
The seaport of Ensenada is popular for weekend getaways (and the bustling
border metropolis of Tijuana for day visits); at the opposite end of the peninsula
the resort towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, specialized in
golf travel and sport fishing. States: Baja California, Baja California Sur.

The Pacific Coast: The “Mexican Riviera” is a year-round vacation resort destination. Not
all of the hundreds of miles of coastline are developed by any means, but it is uniformly
spectacular, with wide sandy Mexican beaches and rolling breakers backed by impressive mountains.
The well-known Mexican vacation travel regions are Puerto Vallarta
and Nuevo Vallarta (Mexico’s 2nd travel destination), Acapulco, Mazatlan,
Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, Manzanillo, Puerto Escondido and Bahias de Huatulco.
States: Jalisco, Nayarit, Colima, Guerrero.
Northwestern Mexico: The largest of Mexico travel regions, Northwest
Mexico, is an environmentally harsh but scenic region that has long been
considered somewhere to get through in order to reach more hospitable points south and on the
eastern Gulf of California coast. Places like Guaymas, Puerto Peñasco and San Carlos, offer
beaches and sport fishing opportunities. States: Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Sonora.
